How often should a gas fireplace be serviced?

Once a year, before you start using it for heat. A service visit cleans the burner ports and pilot assembly, tests the thermocouple or thermopile, checks the glass seal on a sealed unit, and looks at the vent and cap. Can I convert my wood-burning fireplace to gas logs?

Yes, if the flue is sound and a gas line can reach the firebox. Vented gas logs need the damper held partly open with a clamp, so the exhaust always has a way out. We inspect the flue first, because a cracked liner or a blocked smoke chamber is not safe for any fuel.

Is a gas insert better than gas logs for heating a room?

For heat, yes. Gas logs in an open firebox send much of their warmth up the chimney. An insert is a sealed box with its own liner, so more of the heat stays in the room. Logs look more like a wood fire. We help you choose based on how much heat you want and what your firebox can hold.

Does a gas insert need a new chimney liner?

In most cases, yes. Insert makers call for a liner sized to the appliance and run the full height of the chimney. A clay flue built for wood can be far larger than the insert's vent, and gas exhaust carries water vapor that condenses in a cold, oversized flue. A stainless liner sized to the unit solves both problems.

Why won't the pilot on my gas fireplace stay lit?

The usual cause is a weak or dirty thermocouple or thermopile. That part senses the pilot flame and tells the gas valve to stay open. Dust, spider webs or a bent pilot hood can also push the flame away from it. We clean and test those parts and measure their output before replacing anything.

What are the signs a fireplace is not venting properly?

Fumes or a smell in the room, soot on the glass or the face of the firebox, and a flame that lifts or turns lazy and yellow. Heavy condensation on nearby windows can be another clue. Turn the unit off and call us. We test the draft with the fireplace running and check the flue and cap for blockage.

Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm with a gas fireplace?

Yes. Put one near the room with the fireplace and one outside the sleeping areas. An alarm is a backup, not a replacement for a vent check. We test the exhaust path on every service visit, and we will point out if we do not see an alarm nearby.

Should the cap on my chimney have spark mesh?

It depends on what vents through it. A wood fire needs mesh to hold back embers, which matters near the foothills. A sealed gas unit has its own termination cap from the maker, and that cap should not be swapped for a generic one. For gas logs in a masonry chimney, we fit mesh that stays open enough for the exhaust.

What should I tell you when I call?
